Ratio atlas
The lines we are willing to name.
Retracement inside the swing · extension beyond it
Anchor the swing first
Point A is the start. On an upswing, A is the low. On a downswing, A is the high. Point B is the end of that same move. Retracement ratios are measured back from B toward A. Extension ratios are measured past B, away from A, using the same distance. If A or B changes, every line on the sheet changes. That is why evening one is spent on the points.
The percentages below are the ones written on the studio sheet. A ratio that is not on this list can still be discussed, and it will be labelled as outside the sheet.
| Mark | Where it sits | How the room talks about it |
|---|---|---|
| 23.6% | Shallow retracement | A pause close to B. We note it and rarely spend the evening there. |
| 38.2% | Retracement | A common first pullback when the swing was strong. Still needs a spoken A and B. |
| 50% | Midpoint | Half the swing. Not a Fibonacci ratio. Drawn so students recognise it, labelled “midpoint”. |
| 61.8% | Retracement | The level the studio spends the most time on. We argue about the candle close, not the wick alone. |
| 78.6% | Deep retracement | Most of the swing given back. Useful as a last deep mark before a full return to A. |
| 100% | Full return to A | The swing has been entirely retraced. The original map is finished; a new swing would need new points. |
| 127.2% | First extension | The first projection past B that the clinic treats as a regular mark. |
| 161.8% | Extension | The extension we draw whenever 127.2 is drawn, so the two can be compared. |
| 200% | Measured double | A second full length of the swing, measured past B. The sheet labels it as a measured double. |
| 261.8% | Far extension | Drawn when the nearer extensions are already on the page and the student asks what a longer projection would be. |
A cluster
If the 127.2 of a small swing lands near the 161.8 of a larger swing, or near an older high already visible on the paper, the clinic allows a light pencil circle. Both swings must be written in the margin. A circle without those sentences is rubbed out.
Use it in class
The atlas is the reference, not a substitute for a seat. The six-evening studio walks the full list. The Sunday clinic stays on the extensions. The Saturday workshop stops before any of these lines are drawn.
See which class matches the mark you want to practise or write with the chart you already keep.
